'If we’re being fair, everyone knows I won' – uproar at CX Euros after Schreiber relegation
Cor Vos For about 20 minutes on Saturday afternoon, 7th November 2026, Marie Schreiber was a history-making rider from Luxembourg, one who had just taken by far the biggest win of her career having out-sprinted world champion Lucinda Brand to take the elite women's Cyclo-cross European Championship title. But then it all came crashing down. The much-longer-than-usual pause between the finish and expected post-race formalities warned that something was going on behind the scenes. Everyone had seen the sprint for the line between Schreiber and Brand, including the moment the Luxembourger drifted to the left and momentarily narrowed the world champion's channel along the barriers, before noting her own position and moving over again. It wasn't surprising that the sideways move raised eyebrows, but few expected it to go beyond a topic of chitchat over a pint in the hospitality tent. It was worth discussion, but even Brand and her entourage, including national coach Gerben de Knegt and trade team boss Sven Nys, said that it had not ultimately affected the outcome.Alas, the verdict came down, and instead of Schreiber, it was a notably glazed-over Brand who sat before the mic for the flash interview 25 minutes after the winner crossed the line."Every title is really nice," Brand said, expressionless, "but this one will still feel a bit different, I have to admit."
