iMessage auto retry send feature isn’t working

Hi all, Ios27 promised to automatically resend messages if there’s no connection. I can’t get this to work. I keep seeing the same old red alert saying the message hasn’t been sent, and when I turn airplane mode off, I have to send it manually. https://www.macrumors.com/guide/ios-27-messages/ What am I doing wrong here?
