Major Title Change On WWE SmackDown In Mexico City

A major championship change took place on tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown in Mexico City, Mexico. Back in July, Sami Zayn finally captured the Undisputed WWE Championship for the first time in his career, when he defeated Cody Rhodes to win the title at Night of Champions. Sami’s reign would only last for 9 days however, with him dropping the title to CM Punk in Chicago on Raw in a match that was initially set to be against Rhodes before he was taken out by Gunther. Since losing the title, Sami has continued to be screwed out of opportunities, with him not getting his rematch for the title, having two men added to his number one contender’s match at SummerSlam, and his planned contender’s match with Cody Rhodes not getting underway. After continuing to be a thorn in the side of CM Punk, Punk would finally offer Sami a shot at the title on tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown in Mexico City. Sami Zayn Wins Undisputed WWE Championship On SmackDown Ahead of the match, Johnny Gargano approached Sami backstage, with him saying that he would have the first shot at the title if Sami won it tonight, which led to Gargano and Candice LeRae getting involved in the main event. They weren’t the only people who would get involved, as Kevin Owens would attempt to get involved and hit Sami Zayn with the WWE Championship just as Sami did to him during his match with Punk, only for Owens to accidentally hit Punk. Sami would then go low on Owens, before hitting Punk with the Helluva Kick to begin his second reign as WWE Champion. Will Kevin Owens Get His Second World Title Reign? With Sami Zayn now a two-time Undisputed WWE Champion, he has now held more world championships in WWE than Kevin Owens, who had one reign as Universal Champion in 2016-17. With Owens now back in the fold, many fans have been waiting almost a decade for his return to the mountaintop, which now feels a lot more likely than it has in years past. While Gunther, Finn Balor and others continue to chase the WWE Championship, Sami losing his title to Owens to kick off KO’s second world title reign would make for an incredible moment.
