Letter: ‘We’ are not proud of Susan Collins

Letters submitted by BDN readers are verified by BDN Opinion Page staff. Send your letters to letters@bangordailynews.com Recently, I had the misfortune of finding an unsolicited flyer attached to my front door promoting the behind-in-the-polls reelection campaign of Sen. Susan Collins. I’m no litterbug, so I read it and was struck by its vague claim that Collins is “a leader we can be proud of.” I think it’s revealing that the flyer does not boast that “Mainers can be proud of” Collins’ leadership, and instead settles for a deliriously unspecific “we.” Perhaps the “we” refers to Collins’ legion of out-of-state billionaires supporting her campaign, or maybe it’s the manufacturers of ICE’s shock gloves profiting from Collins’ vote to increase ICE’s funding. Of course, there’s always the anti-choice partisans celebrating Collins’ unapologetic support of Brett Kavanaugh and her history-making role in Roe v. Wade being overturned. It’s hard to know for certain. However, I will admit I’m grateful for that unwanted, poorly executed flyer because it inspires me to be more specific. I believe there is someone whose leadership will make Mainers proud and his name is Troy Jackson. Aaron Bergeron Portland
