Stan Bowman Provides Injury Updates On Matthew Savoie And Frederik Andersen

The Oilers certainly made some headlines this week when they announced that four players wouldn’t be available at the start of training camp due to various injuries. Those were forwards Mattias Janmark and Matthew Savoie, defenseman Alec Regula, and goaltender Frederik Andersen. Savoie and Andersen sustained their injuries during offseason training. Speaking with Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, GM Stan Bowman provided a bit of clarity on the timeline for Savoie and Andersen. Regarding the former, Bowman noted that while this isn’t a case where the youngster will miss half the season, he will indeed miss time in-season. More information about a recovery timeline should be known during training camp. As for Andersen, Edmonton fans will be waiting for a while to see the veteran make his debut with the team. Bowman stated Savoie will be out for a shorter period of time than Andersen, though he didn’t provide any specifics on how much time his new goalie will miss. Based on those comments, it’s clear that the undisclosed injury for the netminder isn’t a day-to-day issue. Savoie had a solid rookie season in 2025-26, picking up 18 goals and 19 assists in 82 games while playing a little under 15 minutes per night. Moved around in the lineup a lot last season, it looked like he could have a shot at a more consistent top-six role in 2026-27. That could still happen, but he certainly won’t be playing in every game this time. As for Andersen, he has been unavailable regularly in recent years between injuries or a blood clot issue that crept up a couple of years ago. Still, he’s coming off an impressive run in the playoffs with Carolina, one that saw him post a 1.89 GAA, a .910 SV%, and three shutouts in 16 starts, helping lead the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup. With Edmonton looking for some stability between the pipes, the hope was that he’d be able to help provide some. Instead, they’ll have to wait for a while before he’s able to try to do so. Bowman highlighted Isaac Howard, Quinn Hutson, and Josh Samanski as players who could now get more of an opportunity to push for a regular spot in the lineup. He also mentioned newcomers Aku Raty and Eduards Tralmaks as AHLers who could get more of a look in training camp. Meanwhile, Tristan Jarry and newcomer Devon Levi, who were both going to make Edmonton’s roster anyway, will handle the work in goal. Earlier this month, Bowman had spoken about not needing to make any more moves and the value of carrying notable cap space into the season (around $4.7MM). Now, with Savoie and Andersen both set to miss time in-season, their cap flexibility is much lower; PuckPedia now projects their cap room below $2MM. And with their forward depth thinned out, perhaps they’ll be on the lookout for some help on the wings after all in the coming weeks.
