Mark Mitchell’s Intra-Conference Transfer Reportedly Under Scrutiny by SEC

Kentucky’s pursuit of fifth-year player Mark Mitchell has forced the Wildcats to jump through many hoops. There’s a new twist and turn almost every day. There’s a new wrinkle in this situation, and it doesn’t sound like good news for Mark Pope‘s Wildcats. Mitchell is one of numerous athletes from the class of 2022 who sought out an additional year of eligibility through the court system. The former All-SEC talent received a temporary restraining order (TRO) from a Louisville judge last Friday, giving him the green light to enter the transfer portal and find a new school. About 24 hours later, he was committed to Kentucky. In the wake of the NCAA chaos, various conferences decided to take a stand. The SEC created heavy-handed punishments for teams that are considering playing former NBA or NFL players. An SEC spokesperson confirmed that Mitchell did not fit that criteria, allowing the Cats to dodge a bullet, but another has been fired from the league office. CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander reports that Mitchell’s intra-conference transfer is under renewed scrutiny and in doubt after SEC presidents reaffirmed their conference’s policy on intra-league transfers. “From the sounds of it, the SEC is readying to treat Mitchell’s transfer in a secondary/delayed window as falling under the terms of its previously agreed-upon bylaw,” reports Norlander. Violating that rule would result in a half-season suspension for Mark Pope, among other significant financial penalties. A pair of former Ole Miss players, TE Dae’Quan Wright and DL Zxavian Harris, received a TRO and announced they will be following Lane Kiffin to LSU. Unlike Denzel Aberdeen, who elected to enter the portal prior to the creation of the 5-for-5 rule, Mark Mitchell did not submit his name to the transfer portal this spring. There’s a simple reason why: He thought his eligibility had expired. “UK will obviously fight for Mitchell to be on the roster and argue the option for him to enter the portal in the spring didn’t exist. Of course, the NCAA doesn’t believe the option should be there period,” Norlander wrote on Twitter. “Mitchell theoretically could be eligible back at Mizzou—or outside the SEC.” Prior to the official addition of Mitchell, there were rumblings that SEC commissioner Greg Sankey would use his power to prevent the intra-conference transfer from happening. It sounds like that process is underway. It’s not great news for Kentucky basketball fans.
