Avoid the pitfalls of liberalism, rethink the world as an anarchist - CANEVA (2026)

Notice of forthcoming online meeting Author Anarchist Communist Group (ACG) Submitted by Battlescarred on August 24, 2026 The 1926 general strike: an anarchist communist critique: ACG Online Public Meeting August 24, 2026Battlescarred Wednesday, September 9th 7 pm – 8:30 pm A talk and discussion on the history, significance and lessons of the British general strike of 1926 to mark its 100th anniversary For contemporary anarchists, the General Strike remains highly relevant. It demonstrates that workers possess the capacity to disrupt capitalist society on a massive scale. It also demonstrates that such disruption alone does not guarantee victory. Organisation, political clarity, and democratic control are essential. Movements that rely upon leaders committed to compromise will ultimately be constrained by those leaders’ priorities. From an anarchist communist perspective, the central lesson of 1926 is that working class power must be organised independently and consciously. At a rank and file level, trade unions can play a role in defending immediate interests, but they cannot be treated as vehicles for the defence of the interests of the working class, of social revolution. Revolutionary transformation requires organisations rooted in the working class yet committed to broader emancipatory goals. It requires structures of direct democracy capable of replacing hierarchical institutions. Most importantly, it requires revolutionary militants prepared to coordinate efforts across workplaces and communities while remaining accountable to those they seek to organise alongside. For anarchist communists, the defeat of 1926 was not evidence that revolutionary change is impossible. Rather, it was evidence that revolutionary potential must be matched by revolutionary organisation. Without that combination, even the most impressive demonstrations of working-class power can be contained, redirected, and ultimately defeated.
