There’s also a Prime Video documentary series covering the same case, but this one comes from Skye Borgman and Joe Berlinger. Two true crime documentary filmmakers behind some amazing productions. It’s a fairly straightforward true crime documentary, where we follow the police investigation via bodycam footage. Also, there are interviews with law enforcement alongside friends and family of the victims. It’s a brutal case, and there was a lot of confusion at first. A brutal and senseless crime Murder is always a brutal and senseless crime, and yet, this one did hit extremely hard as it was so difficult to get to the facts at first. Rumors ran rampant because the police were slow to officially state anything. Many people (including friends and family of the victims) found out about the homicides from social media. It all began on November 13, 2022, when four University of Idaho students were murdered. The four victims were Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. It was a quadruple homicide, where the victims were stabbed to death, so it seemed very personal. Their bodies were discovered in an off-campus home, where some of the residents had been left alive. Yet another strange and intriguing element of the case. The college town of Moscow was traumatized, and the police (I am repeating myself, I know) did not handle this case particularly well at first. Protect those who have already suffered Right off the bat, I have to admit that I am not a fan of the build-up. This is a true crime documentary where the quadruple homicide has been solved. In other words, we know the identity of the killer. I recognize that not everyone knows this case, but ending episode one with essentially lining up someone else as the perpetrator is just cruel. As much as I love it when the focus is on the victims and their loved ones, we also have to protect those who were wrongfully suspected or even accused. I think The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare fails at that. Of course, they follow the police investigation and the chronology of it, but they could have included a disclaimer. Imagine having been suspected (even briefly) of having killed someone you loved, and then having it repeated and highlighted in a Netflix docuseries. Again, maybe just briefly, but I do loathe this kind of cliffhanger. Watch The Idaho Murders Netflix Docuseries now The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare comes from director Skye Borgman. Previously, Skye Borgman has delivered such fascinating and dark true crime productions as Unknown Number: The High School Catfish and American Murder: Laci Peterson. The executive producer is Academy-Award nominated Joe Berlinger. Among his previous credits, we find Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey and Conversations with a Killer: The Son of Sam Tapes. In other words, The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare comes from two veteran true crime documentarists. And yet, this is a good production, but it does also deal a little too much with theories before getting to the actual killer. Once again, hurting the one who was not involved. So, instead of getting to the real killer, the one falsely suspected and accused is retraumatized with this docuseries. Just like in the real case, the killer walked free for weeks as they investigated. The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare is out on Netflix from July 29, 2026.
