Astros lose pitcher to IL before White Sox clash

The Houston Astros placed right-hander Spencer Arrighetti on the 15-day injured list Saturday because of right foot nerve irritation, creating another challenge for a rotation already dealing with multiple injuries. The move came after Arrighetti exited his start against the Chicago White Sox on Friday after only one inning. Arrighetti experienced discomfort in his push-off foot during pregame warmups, with the issue located between the third and fourth toes on his right foot. He attempted to continue pitching but faltered through the opening inning, allowing three runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batters while throwing 33 pitches. The discomfort reportedly affected him on nearly every pitch before he left the game ahead of the second inning. Houston turned to its bullpen after Arrighetti’s early exit, with six relievers combining to cover eight innings. The Astros recalled left-hander Bryan King from Triple-A Sugar Land to replace Arrighetti on the active roster. King had been optioned the previous weekend but was eligible to return because he was replacing an injured pitcher. King has appeared in 42 games for Houston this season and owns a 3.40 ERA. He was sent to Triple-A after a four-appearance stretch in which he allowed five home runs. Since being optioned, he made one appearance for Sugar Land before returning to the Astros. Arrighetti got off to an excellent start to the 2026 season after being called up from Triple-A in mid-April. He recorded a 1.34 ERA across his first eight starts and earned American League Pitcher of the Month honors in May. However, his performance declined recently, as he owns an 8.34 ERA over his last nine outings before the injury. Entering Friday’s start, he was 7-5 with a 4.34 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and 87 strikeouts with 48 walks across 16 starts. The injury leaves Arrighetti’s rotation role uncertain as Houston evaluates its options. Hayden Wesneski, who made his fifth minor-league rehab start Friday while returning from Tommy John surgery, could become a candidate to fill the opening when Arrighetti’s spot arrives. The Astros, who have won four straight games, including Friday’s 9-5 comeback victory over the White Sox, entered Saturday in third place in the AL West with a 51-54 record.
