Tigers’ AJ Hinch shares Justin Verlander injury update amid pursuit of pitching again before retiring

Detroit Tigers star pitcher Justin Verlander recently announced that he will retire at the end of this year, although he is working to pitch again before it’s all said and done. With Verlander currently on the 60-Day IL with a left hamstring strain, Tigers manager AJ Hinch shared an update on when fans might see the 3-time Cy Young winner back on the mound, via Chris McCosky on X. “He’s not throwing bullpens right now. Mostly doing rehab work on his leg. AJ Hinch said he’s still working toward getting back before the end of the season.” On one hand, both Tigers and baseball fans alike can look forward to potentially seeing Verlander pitch again. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like his return will be anytime soon. Verlander will undoubtedly have something to say about toeing the rubber once again, but Hinch gave no guarantees on if and when that might happen. Meanwhile, the Tigers are in the midst of a heated race against their own organization to keep Tarik Skubal on the roster. With the MLB trade deadline quickly approaching on August 3rd, the Tigers need to win enough games to prove keeping Skubal is in the best interest of the organization as a whole. The players seem to be doing their best on the field, playing at just around a 100-win pace ever since June 1st. Nevertheless, they still sit at 50-54 and out of playoff positioning; it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Skubal dealt with where they currently stand. For now, Tigers fans can take solace in the fact that both Verlander and Skubal have a chance to be pitching October baseball for their team later this year.
