James Tynion IV Reveals Major Update on Blumhouse’s ‘Something Is Killing the Children’ Movie and Animated Series

It sounds like Blumhouse‘s adaptation of Something Is Killing the Children is moving full steam ahead. During a signing and Q&A on Trinity Comics’ Whatnot stream Thursday night, series co-creator James Tynion IV shared the biggest update fans have received since Blumhouse acquired the rights to the horror phenomenon last year. According to Tynion, there is a completed screenplay for the live-action feature film. What’s holding the project back isn’t the movie itself, but the companion animated series. Tynion explained that the creative team wants to complete the series bible for the animated project before taking both adaptations out to studios and streamers simultaneously. The hope is to find a partner interested in both projects, though Tynion noted that if a buyer only wants the live-action film, the animated series can still be shopped elsewhere. That strategy aligns with Blumhouse’s original announcement that it planned to develop both a live-action feature film and an adult animated series based on the award-winning comic. At the time, Blumhouse confirmed that Tynion would write and executive produce the animated series while the feature film would be developed alongside it. What Is Something Is Killing the Children? Created by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera, Something Is Killing the Children debuted in 2019 and quickly became one of the biggest horror comics of the modern era. The story follows Erica Slaughter, a mysterious monster hunter who travels from town to town investigating disappearances that local authorities can’t explain. The terrifying twist is that the monsters are real—but only children can truly see them. Adults either can’t perceive the creatures or refuse to believe they exist until it’s far too late. As the series has evolved, it’s expanded far beyond its original premise, exploring the secretive House of Slaughter, the Order of St. George, Erica’s past, and the mythology behind the monsters themselves. Where the Comic Stands The series remains ongoing and is approaching one of its biggest milestones. Issue #49 was just released this week, setting the stage for the landmark 50th issue later this year. Publisher solicitations describe #49 as the final chapter before that milestone, with the current storyline leading directly into what promises to be a major turning point for the series. Despite nearing issue #50, there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight. BOOM! Studios has previously committed to at least 100 issues, meaning Erica Slaughter’s story is still only around the halfway point.
