Minimum energy needed to ignite a white dwarf from the outside
What is the minimum amount of energy needed to ignite a white dwarf (thus causing a supernova) if the energy is supplied externally? A much smaller amount of energy is sufficient if it is delivered internally, of course. Could this ever occur in nature? For instance, what if a white dwarf collided with a brown dwarf at high velocity in a galactic nucleus?
