ASL: Listing an increasing number of items:
Question: A student asks:
Dear Dr. Bill,
Suppose I'm listing 2 items. I'll hold up a 2 and tap the tip of the first finger and name the first item and then tap the second finger and name the second item but then I remember a 3rd thing!
I put my thumb out -- but I don't know which finger to touch!?
The thumb?"
Suppose I think of a 4th thing. Do I hold up 4 and touch my pinky?
Thanks,
░░░░░░ (name omitted for privacy)
Response:
I responded to the student and proceeded to make a video showing some approaches to listing.
This video discusses:
How might we do the sign for list when discussing lists intended for public dissemination or display?
Using the non-initialized version of some signs requires what?
What is a benefit of initialized versions of certain signs?
What are some ways to sign OCCUR?
Which five colors occur the most often in English Language (Based on the Google Books corpus: 2022)
What if I've listed four items and then I think of a 5th item? Which finger do I touch?
Suppose you have listed five items and you then want to list more items?
What colors are most popular? (Not which occur most frequently in language -- but rather which colors do people like the most?)
This video covers vocabulary and sentences such as:
HAPPEN
HAVE
HIT, impact
LANGUAGE
LIST
MOST
OFTEN
SHOW-UP, pop up
WHICH
IX-me HAVE FOOD LIST (I have a grocery list.)
HAPPEN YOU GO FOOD STORE, YOU USE LIST? (Do you use a list when you go to the grocery store?)
Plus the video makes a pretty good review of the signs for colors: black, blue, brown, gray, green, orange, purple, red , white, and yellow.
