Hot take: pegboard is overrated in small spaces, so I built a shallow French-cleat tool wall instead (pics + steps)

Progress photos (in order): 1) Before: the cramped corner of my basement utility room, just a blank wall and a pile of hand tools on a shelf. 2) Studs marked and a level line snapped, with a scrap spacer jig taped to the wall. 3) First cleat strip going up, showing the 45 degree rip and the screw pattern into studs. 4) Closeup of a simple box module on the bench (just a shallow tray) with its matching cleat screwed on. 5) Finished wall loaded with modules: drill shelf, small parts tray, tape measure hooks, and a narrow "dump" bin for bits and pencils. My take: in tight spaces pegboard looks flexible until you actually use it. Hooks pop out, heavier tools make things sag, and the depth of hanging tools eats the little walkway you have. I wanted something that feels like an organized game inventory: every tool has a slot and I can rearrange pieces quickly. What I built: a shallow French cleat wall. The cleats only stick out about 3/4 in, and the modules are slim so everything sits close to the wall. Materials: 3/4 in plywood for cleats and modules, 2 1/2 in construction screws into studs, wood glue, 1 1/4 in screws for assembling modules, plus some leftover 1/4 in plywood for bottoms and dividers. Steps: 1) Rip 3/4 in plywood into 3 in strips and cut a 45 degree bevel along the length. 2) Find studs and mount the cleats level, bevel up and away from the wall, spacing them about 6 to 8 in apart. 3) Make modules as simple open boxes (I did 3 to 4 in deep) and screw a matching cleat to the back, bevel down toward the box. 4) Hang the modules, tweak locations, then add specific holders like a dowel for tape, a little lip for drivers, etc. Time and cost: one Saturday afternoon plus a bit of time the next day. Mostly scrap plywood so it was cheap. Big lesson: the shallow part is the trick. Keeping modules thin made the corner feel bigger, not smaller.
